How To Date a Divorced Dad: How Do I keep Him Happy?

Hi my name is Terri and I am a 36-year old Single woman
dating a Divorced Dad. I recently met my Single Dad on EHarmony about a month ago and I need some advice on how to date a
single parent. I have no children of my own and have never dated anybody with
kids. I had a long-term relationship that I just got out of and this SingleDad
that I am dating is so different from the men I am used to dating. I love the
fact that this man is a "complete" person in my mind. He is a good father to
his son and does a good job of balancing his career, family time and time with
me.

I know it has
only been a month, but I am looking to hear some advice from a website like
yours that can offer me advice from a male perspective.

How To Date a
Divorced Dad

Thanks for sending your question to us Terri. I think you
have made a few friends at our office since you speak so highly of the Divorced
Dad you are dating. Sometimes it takes someone with a completely different
background to open up your eyes to a different kind of love. Single Parents for
the most part have to be "on their game" at all times and make it a point to
find a balance at work, home and social life. It sounds like the man in your
life has captured that balance.

As for your request, there are a few things that you need to
know about us Divorced Dads and how we like to date. If you are looking to keep
this man around, here are a few things you should know about dating a divorced
dad:

Flexible and Supporting:

You should know the difference between these two actions
because you will need to do both at times. Divorced Dads are always in a rush
and having an extra set of hands to offer support or being flexible when things
don’t go as planned is valuable in your relationship.

For example, a date that was planned might be delayed
between kid drop off and work delays… BE flexible and offer your support if the
plans change. Another example is when the "ex-spouse" gets involved with your
boyfriends activities with his son. Be "flexible" and give him the room to
navigate around the event involving his ex. Your ability to do this makes him
appreciate you in a whole different way…plus, it shows confidence.

Time Bandits:

Time is everything, so make the most of your time together.
Think "Quality, not Quantity". Right now, your Divorced Dad is keeping all
parts of his life "separate, but equal". This is a natural tendency for most
divorced men to keep their family/custody time separate from work and dating.
When the time comes, these areas of his life will change when long term love
and commitment happens. I wish I can tell the time and date of when this
happens, but it seems like you are on track and heading in the right direction.
Whatever you do, don’t rush a divorced dad into meeting his children or
inviting yourself to a family activity that you were not invited to. This
sounds innocent, but this event has to come about on his terms and the feeling
to meet his children should be mutual. Do not take it personal when you are
excluded from family events. This is just one of those things where you have to
trust me and know that you will be invited to attend when the time is right for
both of you.

Good luck Terri and
Keep me posted.
