Bonding with Your Children through Books

It seems like kids these days are finding their major source of entertainment via video games, large screen televisions (with on-demand access to hundreds of shows), the internet, and other wonders of technology.

While all of these things can be fun, next time you want to spend some quality time with your kids, hit the OFF button and settle in with a good book. As a father, you will be amazed at how books can strengthen the bond with your children.

Here are some easy tips to make reading a fun experience for your children:

• Find new places to read together: Pack a picnic lunch, a big blanket, some favorite books, and find the perfect tree in a local park or your own backyard. Break up the monotony of reading in the same place and make it a memorable experience.

• Visit a library: If you have not stepped foot in a library for some time, you will be pleasantly surprised at what it offers. A well-run branch has interesting displays and attractions for kids. You can easily spend an hour or so browsing, and then your child can select a handful of books to enjoy for a couple of weeks.

• Give books as gifts: For every birthday or holiday, give your child a really great book. Take the time to write a special message for the child someplace inside. Long after toys are discarded, books will have a lasting spot on a child’s bookshelf and your words of wisdom will be cherished forever.

• Go on an outing to the bookstore: You can enjoy a completely entertaining couple of hours at the bookstore with your son or daughter. The children’s section is chock full of great books on display, often with small tables and chairs perfect for little ones to sit down and read to their heart’s content. Cap off the trip by allowing your child to pick a favorite book as a souvenir.

• If your children are independent readers…read their favorite book on your own: Once children are reading chapter books, it can be difficult to share a reading experience together. So consider this- find out what they are reading and pick up a copy of the book. There are some incredible books for advanced readers that adults can equally enjoy. A great way to keep the lines of communication open with your children is to talk to them about their favorite book.

Dads can enrich the time they spend with their children by incorporating books as a regular source of entertainment. Next time you are looking for an activity to do together, think about all the creative ways of turning reading into an enlightening, affordable, and memorable experience.
