Ask SingleDad: New Girlfriend

SingleDad wants to help you understand Single Parent Dating
from a Man’s perspective. How To Date a Divorced Dad is the Q&A Single
Parent Dating Advice section on SingleDad. Our question this month comes from a
Single Dad asking for advice on how to introduce his new girlfriend to his son.

Dear Single Dad,

My name is Brenden and I am a single dad with a 5-year-old
son. I recently started dating someone new. She is the first woman I started
dating since the divorce about a year ago. We have been dating for 2 months
now. She is wonderful and I really want to introduce her to my son. I was
wondering how long I should wait before having her meet my son?

Sincerely Brenden

Mom

Dear Brenden,

Dating someone new is a big change for you! I completely
understand why you are so nervous on having your son meet your new girlfriend,
especially since he is so young. So the question is how long should you wait to
introduce your kids to your special someone.

Patience

Being patient is the key to a great relationship. Spend more
time with her to see if you can see yourself with her in a long term. If you can’t
see yourself with her long term then my advice to you is to not have her meet
your son. If you think she will be there long term then it will be a good idea
to introduce him to her.

I say give it a couple more months to come to your
conclusion. If you introduce him to early then if you break up your son will be
confused. He won’t understand why she isn’t coming around anymore. That makes
it complicated for your son. When you decide you want them to meet it would be
a good idea to all go out to eat first, or go to the park for some bonding
time.

After they meet

Once he meets her it can go one of two ways. He can be very
accepting and like her a lot, or he cannot like her at all because she is not
his mom. This happens a lot with divorced families. Hopefully he is as
accepting as you like. Make sure you don’t just spring it on him, give him time
to adjust to the change.
