Single Parent Dating Advice: Lunch and Learn

Dear Single Dad,

My name is Zack and I am a
47-year-old divorced dad from Philadelphia and I need some advice on how to
handle a sticky work situation.
Recently, my company hired a bunch of new hires. One of them, a cute, 29 year old has
been pretty flirty towards me. Our
banter is friendly and she seems to take a genuine interest in my lifestyle as
a single parent. Don’t get me
wrong, I enjoy the banter and the flirting, but I don’t know if it’s a good
idea to dip my pen in the company ink.
How do I handle this situation?

Dear Lunch and Learn,

Well, let’s start with the
end goal in mind. Are you looking
for a woman to date long term or more for a let’s get a drink after work and go
back to my house for a nightcap deal?
You’ll want to follow certain guidelines for each scenario in order to
not wind up with work drama that will make you want to call in sick.

Scenario 1: You want to
date the flirty co-worker

Dating a co-worker is an
occurrence that happens fairly often. A survey by Career Builders showed that 39% of
workers, at least once in their career have dated a co-worker with 17% of them
saying they have done it twice.
So if you are ready to start an office romance that may get the
gossipers in the office talking, then go ahead and flirt back and get to know
her more. Especially, if she
supports your single dad lifestyle, that’s an extra bonus.

Scenario 2: You want an
office hookup

Another office romance survey
by Vault.com, showed that 19% of men reported engaging in "random hookups" with
colleagues, compared to 12% of women who got busy in the office and not the
gotta get to the next meeting kinda busy. Office hookups can be sexy and fun, but they do come
with a dark side if not managed with kit gloves. So unless you are prepared to the awkward silence on
Mondays, you might want to think twice about flirting and happy hour time.

My last office romance lasted
seven years. So it’s possible to
find a long-term relationship out of an office romance. But, if you are going to go for the short-term
approach, then make sure you establish some guidelines with the cutie patootie,
29 year old.
