The Story

I recently celebrated a birthday and one of my gifts was a
certificate to receive a single blade shave. The funny thing about this story
was that my girlfriend just happened to be bugging me about my beard around the
same time as this gift certificate. Was this a coincidence or a conspiracy?

After the review of the facts, there were no correlations
between the gift giver and my girlfriend, so I decided to pursue my adventure
and head down to visit, Rayzors Barber Shop in San Diego, California and
experience a single blade shave.

The Experience and
History

When I arrived at Rayzor’s, the owner, Johnny Rayzor,
greeted me. John gave me a bit of history about the single blade shave. First
of all, I wasn’t aware that the straight blade razor shaves are highly regulated
and that only a handful of shops in the city of San Diego are allowed to use
this process. Secondly, the blades these days are disposable, which means once
my appointment is finished, they have to throw my blade away and it can never
be used again. John had explained that this is a big deal because of
cross-contamination that could occur if two different people used the same
blade, (A huge fine from the Health Dept. too).

As I sat in the "Old School" Barber chair, I met my shave
specialist Oscar, who gave me the low-down on the shaving process. Since I
walked into the shop with a full beard, Oscar told me that there would be a few
extra steps involved on giving me the best shave possible. The first step was to trim down the
beard to stubble. This is important because if Oscar just took a razor to the
beard, I would experience a lot of pain from the razor pulling the hairs on my
face. The initial trimming brought my facial hair down to short, manageable
stubble.

Now that the beard was shaved down to stubble, Oscar had
something to work with. He finished off the trim down by giving me a good nose
hair trim
. Trimming nose hairs are important for every man if you want to keep
a well-groomed face. There is nothing worse than a bunch of curly and wired nose
hairs sticking out of your nose and Oscar did me the favor of removing all of
those annoying hairs. At his point, I am ready for my single blade shave.
