I was totally unaware of such a "socks rule" until I went on a date with this great guy who happened to be wearing navy blue socks with his jeans and brown loafers. I could not let the date end without asking with my blunt (but endearing) French kind of way: “What’s with the socks?”

He answered that he was following the socks rule: match your socks with your pants. Oooooohhhh I see, blue jeans = blue socks. Hmmmmmm… They still didn’t look right with the brown loafers. So, it turns out, those socks were not his last clean pair as I had thought! He had a whole collection to wear with his jeans and he chose blue.

Now, I do not own any blue socks, only white (to go with my running shoes), black and various shades of brown. That’s it, no blue, never ever…

I went on to explain to him that blue jeans should be considered neutral and that he should then match the socks with the shoes. I told him that, in general, the socks should not be noticeable and they should blend in with both pants and shoes. Although there are some people who chose to make a sock statement by not following the rules but that is best left to teenagers and artists.

And another thing since we are on the socks subject, I don’t think that you should pull your socks as high as you can when you wear shorts. It always bothers me, but maybe it’s my European upbringing.

But now I can’t help but wonder if there is an official socks rule out there… I am curious. What is your socks rule?
