Why does it seem like most guys go for the unflattering, oversized and loud board shorts that cut them off mid-calf? Newsflash: there are plenty of better options for every guy's style and body type. We've put together a small guide to help make your big swimwear decision easy, whether you're a surfer or just a beach bum there is something for you!

THE BOARD SHORT

Probably the most popular style of swimwear with men these days, the board short rests on the hips and should hit right above the knee. Originally meant for surfers the board short should be loose enough to allow movement and activity but not baggy enough where it weighs you down while your swimming. Wearing a swim trunk or any pair of shorts below the knee will make you look shorter and will make skinny guys look even smaller-- not a good look for the beach.

THE CLASSIC TRUNK

The classic trunk is your safest bet with swimsuits this summer. They should fit close to the leg and hit mid-thigh. Classic trunks are slimming and look good on everyone and they still give you plenty of room for playing volleyball and swimming. If your washboard abs haven't made their debut yet stay away from elastic waistbands they won't be very flattering against a soft stomach. Trunks will also give you more support where it counts compared to the looser board short.

THE SQUARE-CUT TRUNK

These trunks are for those with the body to pull them off. They are a step away from the Speedo but have a more masculine fit. The small inseam creates the square-look but doesn't hide much. If you're on the shorter side these will give the appearance of being taller. They should fit low on the hip and will hit well above mid-thigh. A simple print and color go best with these since they are already going to make a statement. If you have a great body, you should show off your hard work and the square-cut trunk is a hark back to the 50s and can add a cool retro vibe to your beach look.

PRINTS AND COLORS

If you are on the fairer side and don't tan well stay away from bright colors and prints. Neon colors are popular with bathing suits but if they are against pale skin they are going to make you look even fairer-- opposite of the sun-kissed look most of us want. Stick to simple, neutral tones that won't have you looking like a ghost. But, if you tan well bright colors and bold prints will look great against your tan and the beach is the best place to have fun with color.

Plaids and stripes might seems like a safe route when it comes to swim shorts but be careful! If you want to avoid looking bigger try smaller printed plaids and vertical strips that will elongate your lower half. If you're on the smaller side, a large plaid or wide stripe could over power you, but if you're thin you can try horizontal stripes.

Rocco Gaglioti Rocco Gaglioti is a self-made triple threat -- creator, producer and host. He founded the televised on-line fashion magazine, FashionNewsLive.com, which almost overnight has become ranked as one of the top ten out of the 150 million fashion and celebrity sites around the world.  He hit the ground running in 2004 with his very first interview on the red carpet with Anna Nicole Smith.  Not bad for a rookie. And the fact that she tried to make out with him didn’t even scare him away from pursuing his lifelong dream of working in the fashion industry.

The 6’3” former model may dress from head to toe in Marc Jacobs and Gucci, but that is not what makes him fashion’s latest “It Guy”. It’s more than likely the combination of his soulfulness, his uncanny ability for undiscerning the next big thing and his beguiling quintessence that landed him on the pop culture radar and will undoubtedly make him a household name. And with his eye on television or radio as a next step, the rising star is certainly not going to slow down anytime soon. Rocco currently resides in Huntington Beach, California.
