Traveling Dad:

Summer Family Travel
to Alaska

Over the years, my summer family travel was limited to a
couple local trips to the Mountains, which usually surrounded my personal
activities and interests like fishing and Mountain Biking.

Now there is nothing wrong with either one of these
activities, however, as a Dad who is committed to family; I realized that only
half of my family enjoyed taking these trips with me. My selfish passions often
dominated my family vacations; which resulted in various levels of resentment
from my daughters who did not enjoy these outings as much as I did.
Translation: Dad losing touch with his daughters is not a good thing. There
were times that I wanted to give up the thought of having family vacations
because of the constant tension between all of us.

Then a solution walked into my life…

The Perfect Trip
Advisor

Sometimes it takes a rock dropping out of the sky to create
a change; or in my case, a girlfriend to re-direct the annual summer vacation
agenda. It’s amazing how much positive energy can change a family like mine. My
girlfriend Beth took charge of this year’s summer trip and these are my
observations on what I learned on how to schedule your best summer family
travel:

Have a Plan and Save

This year, all six of us are going to Alaska and going to
travel by RV. This trip could not have happened without my girlfriend taking
charge and letting me know how much to save and what the overall trip will
cost. Setting a budget is critical when planning a big trip. Compare bank accounts speedily. Look at all
resources that can save you money including internet discounts, military
discounts, and special dates that offer additional savings. Manage current accounts for travel and call all
destinations and ask what special they may offer to groups of 4 or more.

Get Family Input

In order to have a fun trip, it is important to have all of
the family members involved with the decision making process. Each child in my
family had input to a specific activity they wanted to do in Alaska. Now, since
we are heading to Alaska in the summer, not all requests will be honored,
(Snowmobiling, Ice Skating, etc.); however, overall, we will do our best. Having a conversation with each child
and setting realistic expectations is important. Not all activities will be
done, and it is important to mention the restrictions set by our travel budget
and other constraints of time and travel distance. Alaska is huge state and
some activities may have to be forfeited due to time restraints.

Set a Travel Agenda

Overall, my family came up with a plan on meeting
everybody’s wishes on activities, so we set up a calendar of events to follow. All activites we chose have "links" for you to see and reference on your next trip to Alaska.
