Our July family project involves everybody’s commitment reduce our carbon footprint. Our first efforts have been to create a recycling plan for our home.

We decided to start with a purchase of three large garbage cans to separate and store our plastic bottles, aluminum cans, and glass bottles. After a few weeks, we discovered just how many everyday products we use are recyclable! My dad loves his Smartwater (although it doesn’t seem to be working!) and the plastic bottles were plentiful around the SingleDad household. After a few days, it was easy to get used to recycling.

Most supermarkets in San Diego have a recycling center in their parking lot or they are required to direct any customers to the nearest recycling center location. We found ours was open on the weekend and we took our items to find out how much we had saved. They ask you to separate your items according to the material. Clear plastics cannot include any milk products, such as used milk containers. Glass has to be separated by color; brown or dark away from the green and clear bottles. Aluminum cans all go together. Wine bottles cannot be used for the exchange, but they will take them anyway.

Recycling is not only fun, it was also profitable for us as a family. We made $20 in just a few weeks of recycling. We could have made more money if we had more aluminum cans. We are planning to save the recycling money separately for spending money on a family trip that we are taking to Alaska this fall.
