Fitness for
Dads: Learn Pilates, Barre and Real Ryder Spin for Men

This month, as part of our Dads Summer Fitness series, I
threw my body at the PushHouse Studio in Encinitas California to learn how to
do Pilates, Barre and their specialty, Real Ryder Spin Class and I got more
than I bargained for.

About PushHouse:

PushHouse is San Diego’s first and only Pilates, Booty Barre
and RealRyder fitness studio. By offering three diverse workouts, the PushHouse
aims to be the one stop shop for a full body workout. The studio utilizes the
strengthening and toning of weight training, the lengthening and postural
enhancing benefits of barre workouts and the cardiovascular blast of spin,
giving you the most intensive and well-rounded exercise routine available.

About
Pilates:

Pilates is an exercise program that focuses on your core
muscles.
For most Men like me, I was not familiar with many of the moves and
techniques involved in Pilates. At times, I felt that I could barely hold a position
and exercise for very long due to my constant shaking of muscles. Don’t be
alarmed by this motion; it is very common to feel this shaking when doing
Pilates for the first time. This is an exercise program that requires a little
patients and lots of focus on using proper technique. My trainer was
encouraging and very helpful during my program.

What you
can expect with Pilates

A standard, 30-minute lesson is recommended for beginners
like me. Although I can see how quickly both the body and mind can build up to
the more advance classes lasting over 45 minutes; make sure you pace yourself
and find a trainer who understand your fitness objectives and goals.

About Barre:

When I was asked about Barre, I originally thought this was a
reference towards taking a break at the "Bar"… which would mean a break for me;
it was far from the truth. Barre is a combination of balance, form and core
muscle exercises that produces amazing results. I was surprised by my brief
lesson on how valuable these exercises are for my overall fitness. You can expect these exercises to last
between 20 to 30 minutes. I would recommend any Dad to give this a try,
especially when it comes to holding the "ball" in place, (see video).

About Spin:

I have taken a few spin classes at my gym and my original
opinion of this type of class was generally dull and boring. However,
technology has changed and these newer Spin bikes offer a new variety of levels
and movement.

These new Spin bikes are called Real Ryder’s and they offer
the rider the flexibility to move the entire body during the workout program.
Not only are you getting a maximum Cardio workout, you are also getting your
entire body involved during the 30 to 45 minute program. This was my favorite
exercise here at PushHouse because it brought me back to my younger days of
cycling in San Diego, (without the dangers of oncoming cars and traffic)

Conclusion:

Like all new fitness programs, it is important to know your
body and it’s limitations. I found all three fitness programs fun and
invigorating. I encourage everyone to give these fitness programs a try. You
can also see if they are available at your current gym or don’t hesitate to
