Frank,
Scottsdale AZ, Single Dad asks: "I need a couple tips on how to get
myself back into shape"

Being a Single Dad brings with it unique constraints upon
your time, but getting, and then staying, in shape needs to at the forefront of
your thinking. Whilst your kids are, obviously and always will be, your number
one priority, your own physical & mental wellbeing must not be neglected.
Here are a few ways we recommend to beat the bulge.

Get active.

Sounds simple, right? Well, that’s because it is. Moving
around burns calories, so take the stairs instead of the elevator at work; use
your lunchbreak to go for a walk around the block or to the place you get your,
healthy, lunch from; move around the office whilst you’re on the telephone
(this can help concentration, too); don’t drive to the shops if they’re close
enough. Every little bit helps.

Fitness

A focused gym plan.

Whilst even finding time for the gym can be something of a
conundrum, there are also plenty of distractions whilst you are there, so make
sure you make the most of your sessions. Gym trainers are there for a reason,
so make sure you use them. Be specific with what you want to achieve & don’t
let them just prescribe the latest fad. Find a circuit that works for you, but
also works different muscle groups so you can switch between them in your "rest
periods". Change your circuit every now & then so as to work different
areas but also to stop you feeling like you have "plateaued", thus keeping your
motivation up.

Fitness

Squeeze in exercise whenever you can.

Similar to the first part, but this allows you flexibility
& is a good alternative if blocking out a particular time to exercise is
proving difficult & stressful. Often there are little windows in the day
that get overlooked. Waiting for the shower to heat-up or the microwave to ping
as small examples. Whilst it may not sound like much, busting out a few squats,
push-ups or crunches in these can make a big difference. Think of them as
mini-workouts & your schedule needn’t be overly compromised.

Fitness

Use alternatives.

Personal gym equipment & memberships can be expensive,
but that’s no excuse not to find a way. Treadmills? The sidewalk/local park is
free & never totally full. Dumbells? As long as it’s relatively heavy and
safe you can use it. A plastic drinks bottle filled with sand can weigh a few
kilos, as an example. Just don’t empty the kids sandpit! A simple bathroom
towel can be used as a barbell to add resistance to push-ups & squats.
Basically, get creative.

Garbage In, Garbage Out.

Anyone who has ever had anything to do with computers has
probably heard this saying; if you feed a computer rubbish, that’s what it will
give you back. Your body is the same. So, whilst all of the above will help you
up your exercise quota, remember that your diet is as, if not more, important
to your "get in shape" goals. There’s a zillion diets you can follow,
but try to stick to this simple plan: No fried foods, no white carbs, no soda
or fruit juices, chicken or fish instead of red meat, double vegetables instead
of an appetizer, and desserts only on the weekend.
