Probably one of the most misunderstood and misdiagnosed of medical conditions, heart disease continues to kill more Americans than any other factor.

Probably one of the most misunderstood and misdiagnosed of medical conditions, heart disease continues to kill more Americans than any other factor. The bottom line is that science has far surpassed the current medical model of heart disease, but the system is unwilling to change. As men with moderately high cholesterol, we are pressured into thinking that we will die of heart disease without the cunning use of chemistry. Cholesterol lowering drugs called Statins are given out to more Americans today than almost any other drug. If simply lowering cholesterol was the key to avoiding death and disability, we should certainly be witnessing an amazing decline in heart disease-related deaths. The fact of the matter is that of all of the people who actually die of heart disease roughly 50% die with high cholesterol and 50% die with normal and even low cholesterol. Perhaps there is more to the story than just the cholesterol.

The biggest misconception about cholesterol is that HDL and LDL are cholesterol. The reality is that only cholesterol is cholesterol. HDL and LDL are simply carrier proteins that shuttle cholesterol around the body. Look closer at these particles and you will see that they are not all the same. Some LDL particles are rather large and others are rather small. They can be packed full of cholesterol or be almost empty. It is not a matter of now much cholesterol is in these particles, but how many of which kind of particles there are that determines risk for heart disease. This information cannot be gathered from a routine cholesterol screen.

As a practitioner of preventative medicine I strongly urge you to seek out as much information as you can about your health. Gain the tools necessary to protect yourself and avoid becoming another one of the unfortunate ones who thought that they were doing everything right.
