To Train for a Spartan Race
Dear Fitness for Dads,
My name is Kevin and I am
39-year old SingleDad. I am a father of two daughters, ages 4, and 6. I am
approaching my 40th birthday and I have always wanted to do a
"Spartan Race" in my hometown of Chicago, Ill. Can you give me some tips on how to prepare for the event?

Dear Kevin going on 40,
In order to prepare yourself
for your first Spartan Race, you must realize that it’s not just about physical
strength – but mentally and metaphorically as well.
To be fully prepared for
the Spartan Race you must make sure to improve on your running capabilities in
order to be able to complete the given obstacles. If you are not able to carry
your own body weight then I sadly have to say this event is not for you. This
challenge will prove your mental brain capacity. Therefore that will
demonstrate the strength within you.
Make sure to stay hydrated
because this event will be sure to make you sweat!
Preparing for the Spartan
Race may be a little on the tough side. You must be able to run at a decent
pace for a couple miles at a time. If you’re not able to run for that long, maybe
think about not going to the Spartan Race. Start training!!! The more strength
and more speed you have, the better chance you will have at being successful in
the event. This event is also a mental challenge. You may feel like you want to
give up or slow down but mentally you need to be able to push yourself through
The Spartan Race isn’t just
about competing, but it’s about coming together with the fellow racers. Working
together as a team while completing the obstacles like running up and down the
steps of a stadium, rolling sideways underneath cargo netting and barbed wire,
and sprinting on to the next obstacle that lies in between you and the finish
line. Being able to work with and
along-side someone is critical to being successful in the Spartan Race as well
as in life. Train hard and work
well and you will be successful in what you set your mind to!
