It’s that Time of
Year… Dad’s Annual Physical

It’s time for you to stop procrastinating and get that
appointment set to have your annual check ups done. SingleDad is going to offer
you some tips from our health experts on what to ask for and look for when
going to these appointments.

Annual
Physical: For Dads Ages 40- 50

Mid life Medical check ups are not fun, but necessary and
important for Men between the ages of 40 and going forward… You got to wonder
if the great Frank Sinatra had to spend his time wearing a ‘backless’ gown, waiting
for his doctor to greet him with cold hands and large fingers? Getting an annual physical these days
requires two stages:

First stage: Blood
and Urine Samples

The first stage is dropping a blood and urine sample before
your actual appointment. You need to fast, which means no food or liquid other
than water for at least 12 hours before submitting your samples. Most lab tests
on blood and urine are looking to see your cholesterol levels and overall white
blood and red blood ratios are in healthy order. They also test for diabetes
and overall body health.

Stage two: The Face
to Face

The second stage is the actual appointment; the face to face, meet and greet, the
bend over and say, ’Ouch’! It helps to have a health history with your doctor
or the medical facility that you visit. This way you can have past health
information to reference. Did you gain or lose weight from your last
visit? Take this face-to-face
appointment as an opportunity to share anything that you have noticed over the
past year in your daily routine. For men between the ages of 40 to 50, take
note of your sleeping patterns and your overall energy levels during your day.
There are many things that can cause this and it is important to share with
your doctor. Take advantage of this time with your doctor. Be honest, and open
up with any health concerns… anything and everything can be the topic of
discussion. Subjects to discuss
like:

Your Sleep Patterns

Your Fatigue Level during the day

Your Weekly Exercise Program

Your Diet, (or lack of)

Your Vitamins or Supplements

Your Mojo, or lack of testosterone

The two most common tests during your face-to-face exam for
Dad’s 40 and up are the prostate and testicle exam.

The Butt Check and Nut Check

For most men in their 40’s the prostate exam is the one part
of the physical that brings bad memories. However, recently the Prostate exam in-office
procedure is under a lot of controversy. In fact, some doctors no longer use
the physical approach of probing the prostate gland through your rectum. This
exam is looking for any change in size or suspicious texture of the gland. Talk
to your doctor about this exam and see whether he/she recommends an inspection.

The other exam you may encounter during your body inspection
is the testicle exam. If you doctor doesn’t perform the exam, you should at
least know what to look for, I mean feel for. Testicular cancer is on the rise
for men, 40 and over. Most men do not know the proper technique in checking
their ‘boys’, so SingleDad is going to give you a quick reminder on what to do:

·
Find that ‘alone time’ in the shower and give
yourself a reach around. Grab your sack and locate your nut. Grab it softly and
make sure there are no bumps, lumps, and the nut feels symmetrical (that means
round, Mr. Dumas)

·
If you fell any bumps, irregularities or pain,
let your doctor know as soon as you can. In most cases, your re-occurring
personal inspection saves you the embarrassing event of having your doctor give
you the same, ‘reach-around’.

What You should look
for:
Any change in size, Discomfort in your daily routine

What Your Doctor
should look for:
Listening to your daily routine and asking enough
questions about pain, discomfort or a change in your daily routine.

Healthy Dad Summary

Based on the results of your exam and blood and urine test,
your doctor may recommend a follow up visit to see if any of the symptoms or
ailments that you may have discussed have continued after any treatment. Don’t
procrastinate or ignore any changes your body feels throughout the year. Procrastination
on your part can make things worse and possibly prolong your treatment or cause
other ailments in your overall health. Be smart and stay in tune with your body
and your Dad Health for 2012 will prosper.
