Ask SingleDad: Dating Q & A

When Should
I Have "The Talk" With My Longtime Girlfriend About Religion and children?

My longtime girlfriend is very
religious
and I’m not. We have talked about getting married and having children
together. I have one child from a previous marriage and so far we’re okay.
However, here is my question: Are we headed for disaster down the road when we
have our own children?

Dear Gavin,

I hate to break it to you, but your
prospects aren’t good. Relationships are always hard when different religions
are involved and one is more religious than the other. Question is: Will you be
able to compromise on how to raise your children? What happens when her father
demands that you have a church wedding? How will you feel when she attends
religious events without you? So think hard about potential problems and lay
them out on the table. If the two of you can’t agree on what you’re future
looks like, better start packing up now.
