Dads Grooming Guide:

Shampoo & Conditioner

Ask SingleDad,

I got a question about hair care. I am 38-years old and I
want to know the best way to keep my hair clean and in the best shape. I hear
that you can wash and condition your hair too much. Is this true?

-Derrick, Los Angeles Ca.

Answer from Orland Pilon, Mens Hair Stylist at Studio145

Hey Derrick, good question. Let me give you some general
guidelines to follow in order for you to get the most out of your hair health
and grooming products for your hair. Overall, your comment was correct; most men
do not need to wash their hair every day unless they are exposed to dirt and
grime every day. In most cases, washing your hair daily can be counter-productive.

Your hair will
naturally create oils from your scalp during the day, and these oils protect
your hair. If you wash daily, you will disrupt the balance and strip your hair
of these oils. The use of hair conditioner is supposed to replace the oils that
were stripped, however, not all conditioners do exactly what they claim. If you
color your hair, make sure you find a shampoo / conditioner combination that is
made especially for color-treated hair. These shampoos are gentle on your hair
color.

The best advice I can recommend is to wash your hair every
other day, especially and if you use a lot of hair products such as gels and
pomade.
