Are You Fit Enough
for Insanity?

This was a question asked often by my friends as I was
telling them of my ambitious goal to start this at-home, DVD workout program.
If you are not familiar with Insanity, just turn on your TV and you can see the
infomercial showing a group of young, fit adults getting beat up by their fearless
leader by the name of "Shawn T".

I decided to commit myself to this program despite the
warnings. My goal was simple; survive, share, and motivate other Dads like me
who want to try something different and test their own Dad Fitness.

Fitness For Dads

The Insanity Fitness Program is a 6 day-a-week fitness program
designed to give you maximum results in 60 days or less. When I started the
program, I was both skeptical and scared about attempting Insanity altogether.
Those friends who shared stories of injuries or their own self-inflicted
termination due to the intensity, (or should I say Insanity) of the program
were always present in my mind. Despite my fears, I pushed my mid-forty body
and mind forward and said to myself:

Let my Insanity begin…

Insanity Dad, the
beginning.

The program is available to order online and costs $120
+plus shipping options, which can range as high as another $25 dollars. The kit
I received included a set of 10 DVD’s, a Calendar to mark progress, and other
literature that promotes recipes, a support website and their "Beach Body" fitness
supplements and post work out shake. I followed the initial set up
recommendations and took my standard "Before Picture", (damn I looked fat) and
documented my measurements of my waist chest and arms. Having the workout
calendar posted on my wall was very useful for a Dad like me; I like to track my
progress and keep focus on the final goal: The 60th Day

My First 20-days

The first program on the DVD is the Fitness test. This test
is a group of timed exercises that give you an overall view of what is expected
of your body during the Insanity Program.
These are timed jumps, hops, bends and overall agility movements that
you must focus on completing during the time allotted. My first recommendation
is to take this test with some cautious tempo. This is NOT the time to give
110% effort because I believe; this is where injuries can happen. Those twists, turns and timed exercises
are not common movements of the every-day Dad so be careful. Despite my
"Weekend Warrior" body-type; I was far from the mark on most of my fitness test
results, but I didn’t let it get to me.
After taking the 25- minute fitness test, I was beat and I can see how
my friends stories have made this program legendary. It’s not that these
exercises are hard, however, the human nature to be competitive can get the
best out of anyone and I advise you to be smart about your first fitness test;
swallow your ego and get through the test without injury.

During the first 20 days I made some key observations on my
workouts:

  • Stay consistent. Block a set time for your work
    out
  • Keep Hydrated. Drink plenty of water during and
    after your workout
  • This is a DVD, Pause the workout if you need to
    catch your breath

Managing Soreness

These exercises are new movements to your body and you will
feel general soreness all over. It always helps to increase your water intake
and make sure you do the stretching that is posted at the end of each video. The
makers of Insanity also promote a "Post-Workout" recovery shake, which I did
not use for my review. However, I started using some supplements to help aid my
soreness and shorten my recovery period between workouts. I found that
L-Glutamine was a good supplement for me to helps break down the lactic acid
that causes soreness. I found my L-G at GNC, however, you can find this
supplement at any Vitamin and Supplement store.

Insanity Dad, 20-Day
Summary

In summery, the first 20-dyas was a challenge to my Mid-
Forty Body. I felt closer to 50 than 40. I charged through the pain and often
at times I would catch myself swearing at the TV while the DVD was playing. It
was comforting to see some of the participants in the DVD video dropped in and
out of their workout sessions to catch a breath. I felt a sense of accomplishment
at the end of every 45-minuite session and I encourage other Dads to try this
program. Although I did not see any results with my body in the first 20-days,
my overall energy level had picked up, I slept better each night and my
appetite was also increasing during the day. I wasn’t expecting anything at
this stage of the program, because I know that all the real work is going on
the inside of my body.

Follow me on my next post as I will address the next 20 days
of Insanity and how I experienced my personal, "breakdown". For more
